My Running Shoe Rotation — Jack, Partner at Stride
Welcome back to the blog! I’m Jack, one of the three partners here at Stride. While we spend our days obsessing over building the perfect performance socks, I spend my early mornings and evenings putting them to the ultimate test on the roads and track.
I’ve been running competitively for about four to five years now. My running journey started out with Swifts, and these days you’ll find me repping the North Yorkshire Moors AC (NYMAC) vest. I’m currently training under the guidance of my coach, Steve Shaw, and over the last few years of consistent work, I’ve managed to bring my personal bests down to 15:42 for the 5K and 32:57 for the 10K.
When you are putting in that kind of volume and intensity, building a solid shoe rotation isn’t just about having cool gear, it’s about injury prevention, extending the life of your shoes, and having the precise tool for the job. A frequent question I get from the Stride community is about what’s currently on my feet.
Here is a look at my current running shoe rotation, why each shoe earned its spot, and of course, the Stride socks I trust to pair with them.
Everyday running
Adidas Evo SL
As someone logging high mileage and grinding out track sessions under Steve's coaching, I need a daily trainer that doesn't just eat junk miles, but actively protects my legs while allowing me to move efficiently. The Adidas Adizero Evo SL does exactly that, and it’s completely taken over my everyday rotation.
- 100% Lightstrike Pro Midsole: You are getting Adidas' premium, ultra-resilient racing foam in an everyday shoe.
- Ridiculously Lightweight: Coming in at around 224g (7.9 oz), it feels like an absolute feather on the foot compared to traditional, clunky daily trainers.
- Unmatched Versatility: While it’s forgiving enough for easy runs, the Evo SL truly shines when you decide to naturally pick up the pace.
Tempo runs
Adidas Prime X
When Steve puts a brutal sustained threshold session on my training plan, or a long run heavily peppered with race-pace blocks, the Adidas Prime X is my absolute weapon of choice. When you are trying to hold paces in the middle of a heavy training block, the physical toll on your body is massive. The Prime X is essentially a cheat code to get through those sessions without completely wrecking your legs for the rest of the week.
- The "Illegal" Stack Height: Standing at a towering 50mm, the sheer volume of Lightstrike Pro foam underfoot is staggering. It swallows up the harsh impact of the road, meaning my joints and muscles take a fraction of the beating they normally would over 15+ miles.
- Carbon-Powered Propulsion: Once you get this shoe up to threshold pace, the carbon mechanism acts like a springboard, compressing and snapping back to propel you forward with aggressive energy return.
- Next-Day Recovery: This is the real secret of the Prime X. Because it takes so much of the eccentric load off your calf muscles and quads during a hard session, the "DOMS" (delayed onset muscle soreness) the next morning is drastically reduced.
Track training
Nike Vaporfly 4
Track days under Steve’s programming are all about turning the legs over, finding that top gear, and locking into the sharp, aggressive paces. When the session calls for hard 400m, 800m, or mile repeats, I step away from the massive stack heights of my daily trainers and lace up the Nike Vaporfly 3.
- ZoomX Responsiveness: Nike’s ZoomX foam is incredibly light and provides instant, explosive feedback.
- Full-Length Carbon Flyplate: The carbon plate in the Vaporfly is stiff and aggressive. It actively rolls you right up onto your toes, forcing a highly efficient, fast-cadence running form.
- Featherlight Agility: Weighing in at under 200g (around 7 oz), it feels like there is practically nothing on your foot.
- Nimble Cornering: Unlike the towering Prime X, the Vaporfly has a slightly lower profile and a very secure Flyknit upper.
Race day
Adidas Adizero Pro 4
All the easy morning miles, the brutal tempo blocks, and the burning track sessions lead to one thing: the start line. There is absolutely no room for compromise. For race day, the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4 is firmly locked on my feet.
- EnergyRods 2.0: Instead of a full carbon plate, Adidas uses carbon-infused rods that mirror the metatarsal bones in your foot. This gives a violently snappy and propulsive toe-off.
- Refined Lightstrike Pro Foam: The midsole is a massive block of their most premium, responsive foam. It absorbs the punishing impact of racing on the road.
- Forward-Rolling Geometry: The rocker shape on this shoe is aggressive. It actively tips you forward onto your forefoot, promoting a fast, high-cadence turnover.
